Platform
Open data, openly documented
Every data source integrated into MariMap is documented here with licensing terms, update schedules, and commercial use status. We believe transparency about data origins builds trust in the evidence that monitoring teams produce.
Licensing overview
Most integrated data sources are fully open and available for all uses. Google Earth Engine has specific requirements for commercial projects.
Data Sources
All 10 integrated data sources
CMEMS (Copernicus Marine)
OpenThe Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service provides global ocean data including temperature, salinity, ocean currents, and biogeochemical variables. MariMap uses CMEMS data to calculate thermal stress indicators, track seasonal ocean patterns, and contextualize reef survey observations with environmental conditions.
NOAA Coral Reef Watch
OpenNOAA Coral Reef Watch delivers near-real-time satellite-derived thermal stress monitoring for coral reefs worldwide. MariMap integrates bleaching alert levels, degree heating week accumulations, and sea surface temperature anomalies to help monitoring teams anticipate and respond to bleaching events.
Sentinel-2
Free for allSentinel-2 provides high-resolution multispectral imagery from the European Copernicus programme, supporting shallow-water bathymetry estimates, coastline change detection, and habitat mapping across MariMap survey sites.
Google Earth Engine
RestrictedGoogle Earth Engine provides access to satellite imagery and geospatial datasets. Integration is currently in development. For research and non-commercial conservation work, access is provided at no cost. For commercial projects, MariMap maintains a commercial GEE license that is included in deployment contracts.
GHSL (Global Human Settlement Layer)
OpenThe Global Human Settlement Layer provides gridded population estimates and urban footprint data. MariMap uses GHSL to calculate human pressure indicators around monitoring sites, helping teams understand how coastal development relates to ecosystem health trends.
CLMS (Copernicus Land Monitoring)
OpenThe Copernicus Land Monitoring Service provides vegetation indices and land cover classification for coastal watersheds. MariMap integrates these layers to assess terrestrial influences on nearshore water quality and sedimentation patterns.
WoRMS (World Register of Marine Species)
OpenWoRMS is the authoritative taxonomic database for marine species, maintained by an international network of taxonomists. MariMap uses WoRMS to validate species identifications, resolve synonyms, and ensure taxonomic consistency across surveys and reporting periods.
OBIS
Free for allOBIS is a global open-access repository of marine species occurrence data coordinated by UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. MariMap references OBIS records to cross-check species ranges and add regional biodiversity context to survey observations.
IUCN Red List
Non-commercial use onlyThe IUCN Red List is the world's most comprehensive inventory of global species conservation status. MariMap uses IUCN Red List categories to flag threatened species observed during surveys and highlight conservation priorities at each site.
H3 Spatial Indexing
OpenH3 is a hexagonal hierarchical spatial indexing system originally developed by Uber. MariMap uses H3 to aggregate spatial data into consistent hexagonal cells, enabling cross-site comparisons and regional biodiversity summaries at multiple spatial scales.
