Each pathway below has a different maturity, a different audience, and a different evidence bar. The table groups them honestly. "Operational today" means the pathway is actively issuing credits, approving disclosures, or disbursing funds in 2026. "Early" means the market exists but volumes are small. "Required" means regulation mandates action on a fixed timeline.
Blue carbon credits
Operational todayThe only pathway issuing marine restoration credits at commercial scale today. Around 5 million credits cumulatively, roughly 99 percent from mangroves. Prices $15 to $35 per tCOโe, rising with quality premiums.
Corporate disclosure: TNFD and CSRD ESRS E4
Required from 2025 to 2027Not speculative. CSRD is in force: tens of thousands of EU-connected companies report ESRS E4 on a staggered timeline, with large firms reporting FY2025 in 2026 and listed SMEs from FY2026. TNFD has over 500 committed organisations and released marine sector guidance for fishing, shipping, and cruise lines.
Biodiversity credits
EarlyMarket is forming. Around 20 transacted deals across 2024 to 2025, under $1 billion in total volume. IAPB framework launched at COP16 Cali in October 2024. BCA high-level principles reached V7 in May 2025. High-integrity buyers are waiting on methodology maturity.
Debt-for-nature swaps
Rare but growingReal money, small number of deals. Over $1 billion cumulative across Seychelles 2015 ($22M), Belize 2021 (up to $553M), Barbados 2022 ($150M), Gabon 2023 ($500M), and Ecuador Galapagos 2023 ($1.6B face value, $644M buyback).
Payments for ecosystem services and results-based finance
ModerateReal funding available. Blue economy and coastal resilience windows at GCF and GEF are active and growing. Coastal communities can generate stable income through structured payments for no-take zone management, biodiversity conservation, and climate services.
Traditional conservation grants
BaselineThe baseline funding pathway. Foundation grants, government biodiversity programmes, and international NGO funding still cover most marine conservation in 2026. Smaller per-award than credit markets but broader reach.
Blue carbon credits
Blue carbon credits compensate projects for sequestering or protecting COโ in coastal ecosystems. Verra VM0033 covers mangroves, tidal marsh, and seagrass and accounts for roughly 99 percent of blue carbon issuance. Gold Standard released a removals-only mangrove methodology in August 2024. Plan Vivo PV Climate has certified three mangrove projects with several more in development.
Pre-intervention baselines for above-ground biomass (DBH and tree height), below-ground biomass, and soil organic carbon. Repeat surveys on a 3 to 5 year cadence. A validated Project Design Document, third-party VVB verification, and registry listing fees.

Corporate disclosure: TNFD and CSRD ESRS E4
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive forces EU-connected companies to report on sustainability, with ESRS E4 covering biodiversity and ecosystems. TNFD's LEAP workflow (Locate, Evaluate, Assess, Prepare) is the disclosure method most firms adopt. EFRAG published a TNFD-to-ESRS E4 correspondence table so one evidence base can feed both frameworks.
Spatial habitat condition data at each operating or financed site, species presence against IUCN-listed taxa, and ecosystem service dependencies. Methodology transparency and a dated evidence trail auditors can follow. The EU Nature Restoration Regulation (in force since August 2024) sets a binding target to restore 20 percent of EU land and sea by 2030, which raises the bar for marine-linked disclosures.
Metrics Reference filters every metric by TNFD LEAP, CSRD ESRS E4, EU Taxonomy, and VCS VM0033 disclosure frameworks. Site-level habitat condition scoring, benthic cover trend lines, and species lists export into disclosure-ready summaries. Biodiversity credits
Biodiversity credits reward measurable outcomes: ecosystem condition uplift, species recovery, or habitat extent gains. Several methodologies compete: Wallacea Trust's 1-percent uplift on a basket of 5 or more metrics, CreditNature's Ecosystem Condition Index (0 to 100 scale), Plan Vivo PV Nature for biodiversity certificates, and BCA-aligned frameworks published by the Biodiversity Credit Alliance.
A standardised baseline across a basket of metrics (cover, density, biomass, species diversity), repeat surveys over multi-year horizons, spatially explicit evidence, and third-party validation.

Debt-for-nature swaps
Debt-for-nature swaps restructure sovereign debt in exchange for long-term conservation commitments, often financed through blue bonds or credit guarantees. Deals are brokered by The Nature Conservancy, Credit Suisse, UBS, and IDB. Monitoring obligations vary but all require multi-decade evidence of marine protected area performance and ecosystem condition.

Payments for ecosystem services and results-based finance
Payments for ecosystem services (PES) and results-based finance (RBF) tie funding release to measurable outcomes rather than activities. The Green Climate Fund, Global Environment Facility, and bilateral donors increasingly structure coastal programmes this way. Mid-point evaluations can unlock tranches. End-of-project evaluations close out or extend the grant.

Traditional conservation grants
Traditional grants come from private foundations (Walton Family Foundation, Oak Foundation, MacArthur, Packard, Bezos Earth Fund), government biodiversity programmes, and international NGO pass-throughs. Awards range from $10,000 community grants to $5 million multi-year research programmes. Evidence standards are lower than credit markets but rising year on year.
Narrative progress reports, financial statements, and monitoring summaries against the grant's logframe. Photos, GPS evidence, partner confirmations, and simple quantitative indicators. Responsive reporting when funders ask follow-up questions.

- No. Registries issue credits: Verra, Gold Standard, Plan Vivo, and their biodiversity counterparts. MariMap produces the monitoring evidence that feeds registry submissions. We also do not broker or sell credits.
- Which methodologies does MariMap align with today?
